Outlook client not receiving emails

Sorry for the long post, but perhaps this may help someone else, and help me get my question answered.

On August 29th, I noticed my Outlook client was no longer receiving emails. I could log on via web just fine and view messages there and on my phone. It was setup to use gmail pop3. Testing the connection worked fine. I didn't change any passwords. Device was authorized through gmail. I didn't install any new software myself; however, I noticed MS applied some update automatically despite me disabling the update service, setting it not to update unless I did so manually, and even going so far as to modify the registry to stop MS from updating. I have no idea how or why updates keep getting forced upon me but it's very aggravating. Yes, I've tried every single recommendation to disable updates because for some reason MS doesn't seem to realize their updates break things and it always seems to happen at the worst time.  Another lovely thing I noticed was that the update screwed with the Nvidia graphics driver so every time I would boot the screen would be flipped horizontally. Fixed that through a system restore.

So after noticing Outlook client was no longer receiving emails, I did a system restore back before the date which didn't work, so then I did all the standard check filters, disable add-ons, start in safe mode, reset view, performed a repair with scanpst. Nothing fixed it. In fact, it broke worse.  So then I uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled. Then Outlook wouldn't even open. I spent over 8 hours fixing it (of course on a day I didn't have time). It was recommended to run a repair. Tried that. Didn't work. So I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling several times to no avail. There was one tool recommended as a fix on MS's site, but it was no longer available. Found another tool named o15-ctrremove.diagcab through searching and searching.  That still didn't fix it.  Ran it, rebooted. Reinstalled again. Then Outlook itself wouldn't open with Outlook.exe could not open.  So then I attempted safe mode, it opened, but knowledgebase said to create a new profile. Did that. Same error just kept popping up.

So, started from scratch again. Removed outlook, ran the above tool touted to completely remove outlook.  After the errors it made me realize that what this tool did was not actually completely remove Outlook.  At this point I was about to scrap Outlook completely and go with Thunderbird (they have a new interface btw).

So, this time I did a few more things.  I googled manually remove Outlook. Found a site that had all the registry entries and paths to delete manually after removal.  That link is this one down posted by bigjosh near the the bottom found on this page:

Found out that there is still one other database in a similar path and that was c:\Users\[yourusername]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook.  Rebooted. Reinstalled. Was able to open Outlook, but then was forced to upgrade my old .pst.  That updated, a new pst was created, so I now have 2 psts in the window on the left. One pst has all the old emails going back to when the problem started, and the 2nd one has just the new items which have arrived.

I want to combine them but I can't because when I try to import, it says it's already open. I can't close the one I want to import because there is no option.
