How can I create a custom mark for use with footnotes?

I want to use a custom mark to denote footnotes in a Word 2007 document but it's not in any of the symbol maps.  This is the mark I want to use:* but I can't find it anywhere.  Nor can I find a way to insert the asterisk underlined in the Custom mark space in the Footnote and Endnote dialogue.  I tried using the eudcedit program but the symbol came out looking like it was created using Chinese symbols!  Can anyone help me to get this symbol to use with the single footnote I have in a document I'm working on?  Then I'll have it for use with future documents that only require a single footnote.
