Cannot edit excel file outside of brower. I receive the message "Unknown error trying to lock file"

I have been trying to edit an excel dcoument off of the sharepoint site, but when I open up the file from excel app on my computer, it opens in read-only mode.  I then press the "Edit Workbook" button and receive the following error message " Unknown error tryging lock file."
