Corrupted file due to Field Code Toggle? or Open and repair....

I have a major issue. I have two files, one on word 2010 and one on excel 2010. Both files are protected in Sharepoint. The excel workbook has a couple hundred named cells. The word document references many of these, approximately 200. The methodology I used for MOST but not all of the links was to select the cell in excel then past it into word using the paste special, paste as link, unformatted unicode text.

For some of the links however, I pasted into my word doc as paste special paste, as link, formatted rtf text.

Today I noted that the formatted rtf text links were not getting updated. I tried many things but to no avail. At some point I tried closing the word document, then reopening the document but using the open and repair option. Things seem to have gone horribly wrong since then. Now the word document is stuck in some sort of word purgatory. When I open the file it automatically opens displaying all the field codes. To add to the fun, everything, the entire content of the file is one huge field code. To top thing off, when I toggle to field code ALL CONTENT is gone! The only remnants of field values and previous text that is not a field can only be found because the navigation pane shows all of that information.

This is bleak... two weeks worth of work.

I tried to select and copy the contents of said file into a blank worksheet but it will only paste into the field code views and behaves just like the original file.

I am at my wits end....
