Maybe a month ago, Defender told me it had detected and removed a trojan named Kovter. Then, it continually rediscovered it. Every time I ran a scan. ALL the webpages Microsoft offers to help one DID NOTHING. Then, after about amonth, Defender told me to take a download, so as to finally eradicate Kovter. I did. I found an old thumb drive and saved Microsoft's program. then, I allowed said program to reformat said thumb drive. Then, Microsoft told me to restart the laptop from the program on the thumb drive.
Dear Microsoft: ordinary people have no idea what you are talking about.
Restart FROM a thumb drive? I opened the newly reformated thumb drive and clicked on the various folders and thingys there, but not a thing happened. I restarted my laptop the usual way, but with the thumb drive in it. Then I ran Defender.
It found Kovter, and maddeningly, it recomended I download its very same program to a thumb drive. Duh.
How the heck does a layman restart a laptop from a thumb drive? How is that going to run the "cure" Microsoft downloaded?
