Outlook 2016 MAPI problem

I'm using Outlook 2016 (32bit) in Windows 10 (64bit) and I can't send emails from the share option of any Office program (and other programs too) or the "send to -> mail recipient" from windows shell. I get the message that there is no email program associated to perform the requested action.

I've set Outlook as the default email program (it has all its defaults) through program associations. However, the MAPI entry still says "unknown application".

I had this problem since a long time (I had it with Windows 8.1 and Outlook 2013), but I've been using Thunderbird as my main email client so I haven't really bothered about this problem. I decided to migrate to Outlook, so I want to fix it now. Currently Outlook is the only email client I have installed and it works just fine except for this specific issue.

I tried to do a quick and an online repairs but these didn't work. Tried several solutions found in other posts (deleting the outlook registry entry so that it is re-created). None of them have worked. Also tried to compare the registry entries from a working machine with the problem one. Couldn't spot a difference.

Any suggestions?
